Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 9am-1pm, children ages 3-6 years old join us for a Waldorf-inspired, seasonal curriculum from late August through June. Please find more information about this program here.
Singing, storytelling, free play, art, crafts, feeding the chickens our leftovers, and a wholesome snack are a part of every day. We also do puppet shows, play games, make plant medicine, learn about the plants and animals around us, and garden.
Children bring their own lunches, and must have all of the proper gear to stay warm and dry in the weather. We also have a wood-stove heated yurt where we eat and do art and crafts in the cold months. We use a composting toilet, and the children pee outside. This program is for children who are not prone to wander, and who can respond to verbal requests to stay with the group, as we do spend a part of our day outside of the fenced-in yard.
When we look around us, we see rhythm everywhere. The sun rises and sets every day. The moon goes from new to full to new again every month. The tides go in and out each day. The seasons change from Spring to Summer, to Fall, to Winter every year. We can even notice our heart beating all the time in rhythm, and our breath goes in and out, in and out. When creating our days, our weeks, our months, and years, we mimic these rhythms because they work and they help us and the children feel safe and held.
Each day, we follow a similar rhythm:
9am ~ children arrive to Humming Hive
9:15am ~ morning activity (painting, seasonal craft, or baking)/free play
9:45am ~ clean up and circle time
10:15am ~ snack
10:45am ~ chores and get ready for the forest
11am ~ journey to forest, free play in the forest
11:45am ~ story time
noon ~ return to the yard, lunch
12:45 ~ closing circle
1pm ~ children depart

Every year, we celebrate the changing of the seasons with special celebrations and festivals

Afternoons in the Yurt
This year, Miss Christy will be offering an aftercare program for children who are enrolled in our Tuesday-Thursday program for preschoolers. There is room in the yurt for 3-6 children each afternoon. Every afternoon, we will follow a similar rhythm. After a short free play time outside, we will go into the yurt for a short quiet time. During the quiet time, children can sleep or rest quietly while the teacher plays some soft music, sings, or tells a short nature story. Children may be given a piece of beeswax, or a simple toy to play with quietly, during this time. After the rest time, we will “wake up” and have some free play time with toys that are open-ended and made from natural materials, such as colorful silks, branch blocks, and knitted dolls. We will clean up after this and have a snack. Snacks will be healthy and organic. Once we have finished snack, we will put our outdoor gear back on and play in the yard until parents arrive. Parents can pick up anytime between 3 and 3:30.
In the Winter, or whenever it is cold, we will be able to keep the yurt cozy and warm with our wood stove.
